Pet-Friendly Vacations in NC's Brunswick Islands

Paws in the Sand: Your Guide to Pet-Friendly Vacations in the Brunswick Islands

Sandy paws, salty air, and plenty of new places to explore! North Carolina's Brunswick Islands are a wonderful place to vacation with your four-legged family members. From peaceful walks along the shoreline to waterfront dining and outdoor adventures, there are plenty of ways to include your dog in the fun.

Whether you're staying in Holden Beach, Ocean Isle Beach, Sunset Beach, or one of our neighboring coastal communities, here's everything you need to know about planning a pet-friendly getaway.

Are Dogs Allowed on Brunswick Islands Beaches?

Good news! Dogs are welcome on many of the Brunswick Islands' beautiful beaches throughout the year. However, each town has its own regulations, including seasonal restrictions during the busy summer months.

  • Holden Beach: Dogs are welcome on the beach year-round, but from May 20 through September 10, they are not permitted on the beach between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. During those dates, enjoy early morning or evening beach walks with your pup. Dogs must remain leashed. View Holden Beach pet regulations.
  • Ocean Isle Beach: Dogs are welcome on the beach outside the restricted summer hours. From Memorial Day through Labor Day, dogs are not permitted on the beach between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m., even when leashed. Dogs must remain leashed, and they are not allowed in public beach access or public parking areas at any time. View Ocean Isle Beach rules.
  • Sunset Beach: Dogs are welcome on the beach year-round when leashed. From the Friday before Memorial Day through Labor Day, dogs are not permitted on the beach between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. Leashes must be no longer than 10 feet. View Sunset Beach pet regulations.

Wherever you go, remember to bring waste bags, keep your dog under control, and respect local wildlife. Early mornings and evenings are especially enjoyable for beach walks, when the sand is cooler and the shoreline is a little quieter.

More Pet-Friendly Things to Do in the Brunswick Islands

The beach is just the beginning! There are plenty of ways to enjoy the area's natural beauty and coastal charm with your pup.

Explore the Shallotte River Swamp Park

Looking for a change of scenery? Shallotte River Swamp Park offers a beautiful natural setting with wooded surroundings and opportunities to enjoy the outdoors. Contact the park before visiting to ask about current pet policies and which activities or areas may accommodate dogs.

Stroll Through Downtown Southport

Just a scenic drive from Holden Beach, historic Southport is a charming place for a leisurely outing. Walk along the waterfront, admire the historic homes, and enjoy views of the Cape Fear River. The town's relaxed atmosphere makes it a lovely destination for exploring with your leashed companion.

Discover the Calabash Waterfront

Known for its fresh seafood and coastal charm, Calabash is another great place for an outing with your dog. Enjoy a walk near the waterfront, watch the fishing boats, and explore the town's shops and outdoor spaces. Some restaurants offer pet-friendly outdoor seating, too.

Enjoy a Scenic Neighborhood Walk

Sometimes the simplest activities are the best. Take a morning walk along the quiet streets of Holden Beach, explore the neighborhoods of Ocean Isle Beach, or enjoy a peaceful stroll through Sunset Beach. It's a wonderful way to slow down and experience the laid-back coastal lifestyle together.

Pet-Friendly Restaurants in the Brunswick Islands

After a day of exploring, there's nothing better than finding a place where your dog can join you for a bite to eat. Several local favorites offer outdoor seating for well-behaved pups.

Pet-friendly seating is typically outdoors and may be limited or seasonal. We recommend contacting each restaurant before visiting to confirm its current pet policy.

Tips for a Tail-Wagging Beach Vacation

A little preparation makes traveling with your dog even more enjoyable.

  • Pack the essentials. Bring your dog's leash, waste bags, favorite toys, food, and a portable water bowl.
  • Protect those paws. Beach sand and pavement can get hot during summer afternoons. Plan walks for cooler parts of the day.
  • Provide plenty of fresh water. Keep your dog hydrated and discourage drinking saltwater.
  • Respect wildlife. Keep dogs away from shorebirds, sea turtle nests, and protected dune areas.
  • Choose the right vacation rental. Check pet policies, fees, and any size or number restrictions before booking.
